The Norwegian swimming federation says the world champion Alexander Dale Oen has died during a training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona. He was 26.
The Federation president Per Rune Eknes confirmed that Dale Oen died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The federation said in a statement that the 100m breaststroke world champion was found collapsed on the floor of his bathroom on Monday. He was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A hospital spokeswoman Starla Collins confirmed the death, but did not provide further details.
Dale Oen won the 100m breaststroke at the world championships in Shanghai last July and took silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was one of Norway’s top medal hopes for the London 2012 Games.
The Norwegian team coach Petter Lovberg told http://www.vg.no: “We are all in shock, this is an out-of-body experience for the whole team over here. Our thoughts go out to his family who have lost Alexander too early. Words cannot describe the grief they must feel.
“For us here in Flagstaff it is important now that we stand together and take care of each other. It is an unreal situation and we have some tough days ahead.”
My ridiculous, uncoordinated, man shoulder, huge muscles body was made with a ton of tears from the crazy workouts. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. <3
